Plan Your EST3 Upgrade With Confidence

Edwards has announced that EST3 service support and replacement-parts availability will end December 31, 2026. Existing EST3 fire alarm systems are not automatically required to be replaced solely because of this announcement. Continued operation, however, carries increasing risks as manufacturer support and replacement parts become unavailable.

New York Fire Detection & Service helps commercial building owners, property managers, and facility teams in New York City evaluate risks, explore modernization options, and plan an appropriate EST4 upgrade.

Can Existing EST3 Equipment Be Retained?

Many existing field devices and other system components may be retained during modernization, potentially reducing project cost and disruption. What can remain depends on compatibility, configuration, and existing conditions; certain equipment may require replacement. NY Fire evaluates the installation before developing the proposed conversion scope.

Fire Alarm Panel Upgrade Requirements – NYC

A fire alarm panel upgrade in New York City requires coordinated engineering, FDNY review, authorization, and inspection. The process follows these steps:

  1. FDNY Plan Examination. Submit floor plans bearing a Professional Engineer’s stamp for FDNY review. Supporting documents include a copy of the building’s final Certificate of Occupancy (or other FDNY-accepted occupancy documentation, where applicable) and the prior fire alarm Letter of Approval (LOA). The plans document the proposed panel upgrade and sequence of operation.
  2. FDNY Project Authorization. Once the plans are approved, obtain FDNY Project Authorization before beginning the approved installation. Read our FDNY Project Authorization guide for more on this step.
  3. Request for Inspection. After installation is complete and the system has been pre-tested, submit a Request for Inspection to FDNY. The on-site inspection checks the newly installed panel and confirms that the existing approved sequence of operation is maintained.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an EST3-to-EST4 upgrade mandatory?

Edwards’ discontinuation announcement does not independently require immediate replacement of every functioning EST3 system. Building-specific conditions and applicable requirements may affect the appropriate course of action.

Can we continue operating our EST3 system after December 31, 2026?

An existing system may remain operational, but loss of manufacturer support and replacement-parts availability can complicate repairs after a critical failure.

Will every device need to be replaced?

Many existing devices and components may be retained, subject to a compatibility assessment. NY Fire can identify the options applicable to your installation.

Will the upgrade require FDNY approval?

NYC fire alarm panel upgrades require FDNY plan examination, Project Authorization before installation, and an inspection after installation and pre-testing. NY Fire coordinates the applicable documents and requirements for the existing system and proposed scope.
